Working from home is relatively easy, especially when you’re doing what you love. However, how productive can you be when working from home? In all sincerity, working while wearing sweatpants and flip flops is seemingly perfect, it might not necessarily yield to productivity. We understand this, so we have come up with tips to help you work productively from home.
Choose A Perfect Workspace
When working from home, you need to set up a permanent workspace where you can work from on a daily basis. It could be as simple if having a small section in your study area or even in the living room. It should have a table, chair, your computer, writing materials and other office stationery you usually use. You could also put a coffee maker close by so you wouldn’t need to go to the kitchen every now and again to grab a cup of coffee.
Plan Out Your Schedule
If you have chores you need to complete before starting out the day’s job, make sure you get to do them before you start out your work. Ensure you do everything you need to do ahead of time, so you can have a couple of minutes to take a breather. This would prevent you from getting distracted by thinking about what chores you have to do before the day runs out. When you sort everything out from the start, you become more productive.
Take Defined Breaks
To be more productive while working at home, take defined breaks. You shouldn’t work at a stretch for long hours, after all, you’re at the comfort of your own space. Take a break and grab something to eat. You could even decide to take a power nap. Unlike what people think, working 100% of the time doesn’t mean you’ll be productive. It is all about working smart, and not necessarily working round the clock.
Eliminate All Distractions
Although this seems like a no-brainer, you’re meant to remove anything that would distract you from working. It could be something as simple as your smartphone, or not as simple as putting your kids away. Distractions easily slow down productivity, whether you agree or not. The best way to keep distractions at minimal is to focus on your work and remove everything that can serve as a distraction. During your break, you can check your smartphone or your kids.
Manage Personal Relationships
This perhaps might be the biggest challenge of working from home. You need to set boundaries for your friends and family so they don’t just pop in and out of your house or call you anytime they feel like. It is even worse when they think you don’t do anything, so they just show up when they like. Stay diplomatic and let them know when to draw the line. Tell them it isn’t okay for them to come anytime they like. Make your work sustainable by spelling things out to your family and friends.
